Lighting is a discipline positioned between electrical engineering and architecture. It requires not only creative and aesthetic work but also attention to technical standards and regulations. Each type of space or object must be considered individually, which makes lighting design a varied and engaging profession.
Currently, the field of lighting is being transformed by Building Information Modeling (BIM). Planning processes are becoming more interconnected, data exchange has significantly expanded, and commercial aspects of lighting are also changing. This book illustrates how modern lighting continues to evolve through BIM.
This is the English translation of the German book „BIM und Beleuchtung“ and ist only available as ebook.

Beschreibung
BIM and Lighting
Every building needs light. Without it, even the most beautiful architecture or the best concept remains unseen. Vision is by far the most important way humans perceive a building, while the other senses play only a minor role. About one third of our brain capacity is dedicated to seeing—making the visual experience of a building especially powerful.
Lighting designers and planners work with both natural and artificial light to make buildings, spaces, and objects visible. Light shapes how we perceive and use architecture.
Lighting sits at the intersection of electrical engineering and architecture. Beyond creative and aesthetic aspects, technical standards and regulations must always be considered. Each space and object type requires an individual lighting approach, making the profession both challenging and rewarding. Once someone starts working with light, they often remain fascinated by it.
Today, the lighting industry is being transformed by BIM (Building Information Modeling). Planning processes are becoming more connected, data exchange has expanded, and even commercial aspects of lighting are evolving. This book shows how modern lighting continues to develop with BIM.

Robert Heinze began working with stage and event lighting as a teenager in the late 1990s. During his studies in electrical engineering, he co-founded an event management company and gained experience as a production manager. At the age of 24, he published a book based on this experience, which sold around 5,000 copies. As a student, he joined the VDE and the LiTG, where he is still an active member of the Leipzig-Halle district group.
After completing his degree, Heinze moved near Munich and joined the American stage lighting manufacturer ETC as a technical product manager for lighting consoles. Two years later, he returned to Leipzig and became self-employed as a lighting designer and project manager.
In 2008, he started working for the luminaire manufacturer TRILUX in Leipzig as a lighting planner. Two years later, he moved to the TRILUX headquarters in Arnsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, as a process developer for lighting planning. In this international environment with around 120 lighting designers, he gained valuable insights into lighting processes. He also developed the company’s first internal software applications and became a founding lecturer at the TRILUX Academy, where he created seminar and examination content for the DIN-certified lighting technician program. During this time, he also began his work in standardization with DIN, CEN, ISO, and ZVEI. Later, Heinze became head of technical editing at TRILUX, where he was responsible for product data, while also publishing numerous articles and conference papers on lighting and BIM, and regularly speaking at professional events.
In 2019, Heinze joined Relux in Basel, Switzerland, as CTO, responsible for the development of all Relux products. Today, he lives with his wife and two children in a small German town directly on the Swiss border.
